Douglas Drysdale
Charles Douglas Drysdale (born about 1915) was a Scottish nationalist political activist.
Drysdale's background was in accounting. In the 1950s, he lived in Canada, where he was a partner in Howard J. McDougall & Co.〔''The Accountant'', vol.126, p.696〕 In 1952, he returned to Dollar in Scotland, where he became the manager of an engineering plant in Larbert.〔''New Society'', Vol. 5, p.9〕〔"SNP Demand Consultation on Joining the Common Market", ''Glasgow Herald'', 5 June 1967, p.9〕 He joined the Scottish National Party in the early 1960s and, despite having no previous political experience,〔Gordon Wilson, ''SNP: The Turbulent Years, 1960-1990'', p.27〕 he was elected Vice Chairman with responsibility for Organisation and Finance in 1964.〔William Wolfe, ''Scotland Lives'', p.65〕〔"(History of the SNP )", Aberdeen SNP〕 In 1966, his area of responsibility was reduced to only Finance.〔Gordon Wilson, ''SNP: The Turbulent Years, 1960-1990'', p.31〕
Drysdale first stood for the SNP at the 1964 UK general election in Clackmannan and Eastern Stirlingshire, taking 12.2% of the vote and narrowly failing to hold his deposit. At the 1966 UK general election, Drysdale increased his vote share to just over 20%, one of the SNP's best results.〔William Wolfe, ''Scotland Lives'', p.80〕 However, he became unhappy with the leadership of Arthur Donaldson, and in 1967 he stood for the leadership of the party against Donaldson. He had little support among the party's grassroots, and was heavily defeated,〔William Wolfe, ''Scotland Lives'', pp.98-99〕 362 votes to 37.〔
Drysdale drifted out of the Scottish nationalist movement, but his daughter Lorna married Robert Anderson, who was central to the "Tartan Army" Scottish nationalist direct action movement of the mid-1970s.〔"A faith that linked five men", ''Glasgow Herald'', 2 October 1976, p.5〕
